[Jakarta, December 14, 2023] - Since October 2023, Valvindo, one of the major key player in the energy services sector, has officially launched the waste management program called 'Caring for Waste' with the aim of raising environmental awareness among Valvindo families.
Based on the latest report from Media Indonesia per August 3, 2023, Indonesia ranked as the third world's largest waste producer. Waste is one of the most detrimental and serious issues in Indonesia, if this issue left unresolved, it could lead to an unsutainable damage to the environment.
Facing this major environmental issue, Valvindo and along with one of its reliable Waste Ambassadors, Ageng Nawang Puspa, initiated a shift in waste disposal behavior by encouraging waste sorting, creating a positive impact for not only on the environment but it's also economically.
In December, waste management program at Valvindo Bekasi office achieved its remarkable outcome. Wastes are successfully collected including, 17 kg of plastic bottles, 7 kg of plastic cups, 10 kg of shredded paper, 2 kg of bottle caps, and 1 kg of gallon caps.
The waste collection process did not stop at Valvindo Bekasi office. The Waste Ambassador team collaborated closely with Gold Mountain Waste Bank in Rawamangun, East Jakarta. In there, the collected waste get underwent a creative recycling process such as, transforming plastic waste into souvenirs i.e. wallets and bags, and converting bottle caps into blocks which can be transformed as ceramics and decorations.
'Caring for Waste' program is not only just a concrete step for Valvindo to support environmental sustainability but also aims to create collective awareness about the importance of every individual's role in environmental preservation. With these initiatives, Valvindo continues to strengthen its commitment to creating positive change for both environment and society.
Behind the reliability of an oil and gas facility lies an intricate system that works continuously to ensure smooth energy flow. One of the most critical components of this system is the valve—and when a valve system malfunctions, the impact on operational safety and efficiency can be significant. This was the background of the Motor Operated Valve (MOV) restoration project at the Tank Farm of PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional (KPI) Unit II Dumai.
The goal of the project was to replace the manual valves at the fuel storage tanks with an electrically controlled system operable both locally and remotely. Although the project had already started under the previous vendor, it stalled midway, leaving behind numerous unresolved technical issues. That’s when Valvindo stepped in—not merely to continue the work, but to untangle existing problems, redesign the system, and deliver a complete solution.
The primary challenges were not only technical but also informational. There was virtually no documentation available, and very little transparency from the user’s team about the existing condition. Most critical information—both the history of previous work and technical specs of already installed equipment—was missing. Valvindo had to begin with a reverse engineering approach, re-mapping the entire system by directly analyzing field devices and conducting informal discussions with technicians, engineers, and operators involved.
Several unexpected issues surfaced during fieldwork. One was the discovery that the actuator mounting had been improperly installed by the previous vendor, resulting in damage to the mounting flange during the first function test. Since this damage fell outside the original scope of work, the Valvindo team provided a temporary solution using a clamp and recommended fabricating a new, properly designed flange for future work.
Another issue involved the use of control cables that didn’t match their intended function. Although also beyond the current project’s scope, Valvindo gave technical advice to replace them during the next development phase.
This project marked Valvindo’s first full-package installation, covering everything from field devices to digital control configuration. The scope included MCC panel modification, actuator mounting, cable installation, electric actuator configuration, SCADA HMI setup, and master station integration. At the project’s conclusion, a complete as-built drawing was delivered to serve as a future technical reference.
On the team level, most technical execution was handled by Valvindo’s service division, while purchasing played a key role in supplying parts and components. Cross-functional collaboration flowed smoothly without excessive bureaucracy. A unique experience also came from adapting to local Dumai culture—from the ever-present Padang food and fast-paced local dialect to community gatherings at traditional coffee stalls—adding personal color to the project journey.
Technically, the work was classified as medium complexity. However, the accumulated problems, lack of principal support, and the need to master unfamiliar actuator modules (such as AUMA products) pushed the team to operate at a much higher level of technical depth.
Despite these hurdles, the project was completed successfully. The MOV system is now fully operational. More importantly, the team managed to build user confidence, even among operators who were initially hesitant to trust the new system. As a result, Valvindo was directly appointed to execute the next phase of the project—a clear reflection of client satisfaction and trust.
This experience offered key reflections for Valvindo. One of the biggest takeaways was the importance of deep technical mastery to unravel and resolve complex projects. Another was the crucial role of genuine principal support—not just in name or logo, but through real-time technical tools, guidance, and presence in the field.
For future similar projects, Valvindo will apply more precise actuator sizing and aim to optimize each component's performance—neither excessive nor lacking, but exactly fit-for-purpose.
This project stands as proof that success is not just about getting the job done—it's about reviving systems once considered failed, delivering real solutions, and honoring the trust placed in us with tangible results.
